POINTS TO PONDER
I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and
delivered me from all my fears.
- Psalm 34: 4
Some naturalists were searching in the Alps
for rare specimens of flowers. They saw an
unusually interesting one a way down in a
terrible precipitous canyon. It was on a little
ledge of rocks very hard to get to. The only
way was by means of a life line. They spied
a shepherd boy over on the mountains. They
called to him and held out some bright new
coins and told the boy if he would allow
them to put a life line about him and let
him down to where he could reach and get
the flowers they would give him the coins.
"He looked at those coins; oh, how he
wanted them - then peered down into the
deep cavern, then up into the strange faces. Then
shook his head. It was a great struggle. He wanted the coins
desperately. But the
cliff was dangerous. The men were strangers. Again
and again he took the full survey. The canyon, the coins, how his eyes
did snap
when he thought of having those coins as his very
own; then up into the strange faces,
only to again shake his head. All at once he had a
thought. He ran across the mountain side and entered a mountain
home. Soon he
emerged with a great, strong, kindly man.
Evidently it was his father. He had hold
of his hand and was so eager for him to
hasten that he almost dragged him along.
Finally when almost at the edge of the cliff
the boy ran up to the strangers and said,
"You may tie the life line under my arms now. I will
go down into the canyon - if you let
my father hold the rope."
"Yes, yes! - down into the valley of
sorrow if that must be; down into the
gorge of pain; we can safely go anywhere
if our loving Heavenly Father holds the rope.
